Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick first published in 1968. The main plot follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter of androids, while the secondary plot follows John Isidore, a man of sub-normal intelligence who befriends some of the androids.
The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic near future, where the Earth and its populations have been damaged greatly by Nuclear War duringWorld War Terminus. Most types of animals are endangered or extinct due to extreme radiation poisoning from the war. To own an animal is a sign of status, but what is emphasized more is the empathic emotions humans experience towards an animal.
Deckard is faced with "retiring" six escaped Nexus-6 model androids, the latest and most advanced model. Because of this task, the novel explores the issue of what it is to be human. Unlike humans, the androids possess no empathic sense. In essence, Deckard probes the existence of defining qualities that separate humans from androids.
The book's plot served as the primary basis for the 1982 film Blade Runner.

The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
This book is inspired by the life of Muhammad. The book questions verses from Qur'an and the muslim faith, making it highly controversial. Salman Rushdie is now in hiding due to a fatwa issued against him because of the book. The two main characters meet on a plane that explodes over the English Channel. They both survive but one transforms into the devil and the other an the archangel Gabriel . They begin to have dreams of when Muhammad was writing the Quran. In the present the two fight over the same woman.
One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie’s best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in mid-flight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times.

I chose 'Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? because I remember finding the story very interesting when I had to read it for my American Literature class a couple semesters ago. The story (in my opinion) is actually humorous and keeps you wanting to find out more. All in all I enjoyed the book and think it has potential for an interesting cover.
Here is the summary for those who are not familiar with the story...
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is set in a New England university. It opens with the main characters, George and Martha coming home from a party at her father's house. The two of them clearly care deeply for each other, but events have turned their marriage into a nasty battle between two disenchanted, cynical enemies. Even though the pair arrives home at two o'clock in the morning, they are expecting guests: the new math professor and his wife.
Of course, as it turns out, this new, young professor, Nick, actually works in the biology department. He and his wife, Honey, walk into a brutal social situation. In the first act, "Fun and Games," Martha and George try to fight and humiliate each other in new, inventive ways. As they peel away each other's pretenses and self-respect, George and Martha use Honey and Nick as pawns, transforming their guests into an audience to witness humiliation, into levers for creating jealousy, and into a means for expressing their own sides of their mutual story. In the second act, "Walpurgisnacht," these games get even nastier. The evening turns into a nightmare. George and Martha even attack Honey and Nick, attempting to force them to reveal their dirty secrets and true selves. Finally, in the last act, "The Exorcism," everyone's secrets have been revealed and purged. Honey and Nick go home, leaving Martha and George to try to rebuild their shattered marriage.

"Monster" Walter Dean Myers
I was never much of a reader, but this is one of my favorite books from my youth. It follows the story of 16 year old Steve Harmon, a young black man in Harlem, who has been arrested for acting as the look-out in a robbery that resulted in a murder. He acts as the narrator of the story, and writes it in the form of a screenplay. He faces the horrors of jail, being tried as an adult, and possibly spending the rest of his life in prison.

Introspection:
Steve must come to terms with who he really is, and how his current ordeal plays a role in his life. Is he being punished for something else he might have done?
Peer Pressure:
Why does Steve do the things he does and associate with the people he does.
Race in New York:
Groups of people are separated by class, race, culture, wealth, etc...Steve and most of the other characters are black, and lack resources access to better resources because of the way people choose to cut themselves off from one another.
Race in the Judicial System
There is a sense in the prosecution that because Steve is a young black man from a poor neighborhood, he "likely" played a role in the shooting.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
This books is about a young girl, Sakamoto Chiyo, and her life as a geisha. The story begins with her and her sister being sold. Her mother is dying, and she suspects her father is soon to follow. Chiyo is sold to a geisha house (okiya), her rare blue eyes being a strong appeal to her appearance. Her sister is sold into prostitution. Chiyo becomes an apprentice geisha along with 'Pumpkin.' Hatsumomo is the only working geisha in the okiya, and is cruel to Chiyo, who wants to run away. Hatsumomo blackmails Chiyo into taking the blame for ruining a kimono by giving her the location of her sister. Hatsumomo gets caught with a boyfriend, and the okiya gets locked at night, ruining Chiyo's plan to run away with her sister. She tries to get out by climbing the roof roof, but falls and breaks her arm, getting caught. Chiyo's punishment is to be a house maid for the rest of her life, no longer to be a geisha.
Several years later, she is crying on a bridge and a man, accompanied by geisha, buys her a snowcone, and lets her keep the change. Instead of leaving Gion (the geisha district), she goes to the temple and prays to the gods to allow her to become a geisha, so she can see the kind man again, and donates the coins. Unexpectedly, Mameha, Gion's most famous geisha, shows at the okiya and convinces Mother to let Chiyo train under her to be a geisha. During training, she sees the kind man from childhood, the Chairman. Unfortunately the Chairman's friend Nobu becomes enamored with Chiyo, preventing the Chairman from pursuing her himself. Chiyo becomes the geisha Sayuri, and becomes even more successful than Mameha. This causes the okiya to chose Sayuri as the heir to the okiya, instead of Pumpkin, ruining their friendship.
WWII hits, and Gion is closed down. Nobu managed to send her up north to the country side at a kimono maker's shop. The work is hard, but she is safe from the bombings. After the war, Nobu wants her to start up being a geisha again, to help influence political figures to support Nobu's electric company. During this time, Nobu is planning to make him Sayuri's danna (basically supporting her for the rest of her life). Sayuri, being in love with the Chairman, asks Pumpkin to have Nobu meet her. Sayuri asks the General to meet her too. Pumpkin tells the Chairman instead, so he walks in on Sayuri and the General. The Chairman knows Sayuri does not want to be with Nobu, so he tells Nobu about what happened, and Nobu never wants to see her again. This allows the Chairman to become Sayuri's danna and she gets to be with him.

The Savage Girl by Alex Shaker
The Savage Girl is a very interesting book to say the least. It revolves around a group of fashion trend spotter, Javier, Ursula and their boss Chas, that spend their day taking notes on how people dress and act in public places such as parks, airports and malls. Their world is filled with urban sprawl and a culture obsessed with materialism; and the only way to reach them is with a new, drastic ad campaign. This new campaign is developed when Ursula’s younger sister, Ivy, a fashion model, has a mental breakdown before a fashion show. Ivy is soon recruited as the model for a new dieting trend – diet water. Ursula knows her sister is being used and hatches plan to stop Ivy from being as a ploy in the diet water scheme. Ursula eventually succeeds, but her plans come at a cost.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (also titled Northern Lights)
This novel is about a young girl, Lyra, who along with her daemon (external form of a person's soul in the form of an animal) Pantalaimon, go on an adventure to save her friend. Her friend was kidnapped by a group of people doing experiments on children in order to figure out the true nature of Dust - a microscopic particle that can bring different universes/worlds together. She encounters and gets help from a number of different people in her quest. She acquires a device to help her on her journey, an athliometer (golden compass) - a device that allows her to see past, present, and future; which, gives her answers to questions she has and helps guide her on her way. She eventually finds her friend and helps to free the children. At the end of the novel she leaves her world and goes into another.

Jane Eyre- Charlotte Brontë
Jane Eyre is a famous and influential novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. The novel merges elements of three distinct genres. It has the form of a Bildungsroman, a story about a child's maturation, focusing on the emotions and experiences that accompany growth to adulthood. The novel also contains much social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, and finally has the brooding and moody quality and a Byronic character typical of Gothic fiction. This novel was thought to be ahead of it's time because of the strong female lead and is considered one of the first feminist novels.
The actual plot of the story revolves around Jane an orphan who was brought up by her evil aunt till she was 10 then was sent to a girls school called Lowood in which the head caregiver was cruel. She gained one friend named Helen Burns but she dies from the poor conditions at the school. After 8 years at Lowood (which do get better after a few years) Jane gets a job as a governess for Mr. Rochester's ward and she beings to finally feel like she has a real life, and falls in love with Mr. Rochester and he with her (after a few rocky moments through out their relationship) only to find out that he has a dark secret that will not allow them to be together. She flees where she meets a pair of sisters and their brother who take her in and help her get a job. After a year after she flees she from her love for Mr. Rochester she finds out that the pair of sisters and brother are her cousin and she was left a fortune by her late uncle which her aunt had hid from her. She shares her fortune with her family that she is more then happy to find out that she has and returns to Mr. Rochester and finds that he has been in a accident that has left him scarred on half his face from burns and that he has lost his sight. She does not care and they are finally able to be together. (Happy note- he regains his sight enough to see his first born son)

The story starts with high school geek Arnie Cunningham who is picked on by bullies bossed around by over protective parents. Arnie in search for his first car falls in love with "Christine", a bright red 1958 Plymouth Fury in need of total overhaul and restoration. It's rotting away in and elderly mans yard for sale for $250. This car is no ordinary classic it's been possessed by an evil supernatural force that kills almost everyone around it since it was on the assembly line, everyone except Arnie, a teen and first time car owner willing to by anything. After purchasing the car Christine uses him by possessing him to get new parts to restore it. After restoring the car to mint condition Christine has total control of Arnie, it even fixes itself when damaged and drives itself and Arnie to kill. Eventually, Christine possesses Arnie far enough to turn against his family and friends keeping only Arnie to itself. One by one, Christine and the possessed Arnie kill their victims first starting on Arnie's high school bullies then everyone else he knows. By the end of the story Arnie's best friend Dennis and girlfriend Leigh who was almost killed by Christine have no other choice but to end the murders and save their own lives by terminating Christine and their irreversibly turned evil friend Arnie.

Three sister’s with varying troubles are brought back together when they find out their mother is having open heart surgery by a bright pink letter in the mail. Even though they are wary to come back home to their mom because of a traumatic childhood, all three return. The one driving force for their return is their special needs brother Henry, who is a loving person. Their grandmother has dementia and truly believes she’s Amelia Earhart. One sister has OCD, one has eating problems, and one has so many one night stands she can’t count them. All three have to revive the family bakery which makes primarily cupcakes. Very funny and heartfelt.
