Smith- idea #1 and #5 seem to be the most interesting- if you do #5, be careful with how you place the items within the crocodile. Also, this book has a lot of potential in terms of the style of illustration/imagery......i would suggest you go in a realistic(surrealistic) direction.

McCain- your quilt idea is much better than your pea circle jacket. Try using more interesting imagery than just the 20 mattresses. Sorry, but the pea idea was just too typical.

James, Megan- i think you should combine your text heavy concept with your telescreen idea. Try to implement a harsh propaganda/oppression theme. You have some good ideas to work off of.

marasigan - the merchant of marvels and the peddler of dreams

Synopsis, from the front flap:

What to give the person who has everything?

Frederick Knick-Knack, the Peddler of Dreams, has a dilemma.  What to give his most marvelous friend, the Merchant of Marvels, on her birthday?  The Merchant of Marvels surely cannot want for much.  So Frederick must tempt her with every imaginable delight: elephants as small as specks of sand, an eyelash stolen from the Queen of Sheba, a sliver of the splinter that pricked Sleeping Beauty, the tear liqueur of the King of Crocodiles--but nothing will suffice.  Until, at last, Frederick alights upon what he comes to realize is the perfect gift--the gift that is the ultimate expression of his love.

so imagine where the images are drawn the shapes are actually cut out, and the back side would be items from the book (represented in the suitcase by the circles).  not exactly sure how this one would work once it is entirely unfolded.

this is not exactly how it will end up.  i would like it to have more folds for sure.  lots of different flaps to lift and pull and whatnot.  paper folding isn't my forte, if you haven't noticed...

this turns the cover into something like a chest/suitcase, where the peddler of dreams keeps all his trinkets and charms.  one side of the poster would be printed with the chest/suitcase texture, and the other side would be rows and columns of the items he has.

Sorry to the people who were supposed to critique mine.  I meant to have these up yesterday but got very busy.  I hope you can forgive me!

Also, take a look inside the book.  It's wonderful.

My book is The Catcher and the Rye

My ideas is image based

There will be a head to shoulder shot of each character. The cover will unfold and each character will be revealed according to the order of the story.

I'm thinking about using celebrity faces to depict the characters in the story.

The art work will be done in illustrator and have a grunge type background.

Brief Summary

T he Catcher in the Rye is set around the 1950s and is narrated by a young man named Holden Caulfield. Holden is not specific about his location while he’s telling the story, but he makes it clear that he is undergoing treatment in a mental hospital or sanatorium. The events he narrates take place in the few days between the end of the fall school term and Christmas, when Holden is sixteen years old.

Lanni - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

top to bottom.

1. have the title like it was on a box stamped on there. then on each fold would have a character profile, then ending on a group image of all characters

2. Have the gates of the factory on the cover, then open to folds with a picture of a main event such as the TV room as pictured, then when opened the back will be a poster of a landscape of inside the factory.

3. a wonka bar on the cover, then different scenes on the folds such as this one the invention room, then when opened it will show a golden ticket.

4. the cover would be a golden ticket, then each fold in a random order will just be a type solution for the 7 deadly sins that are abstract told through out the novel, then finishing with a picture of a top hat on its side, giving it a modern feel with a lot of negative space and the tile up top.

5. The cover would be a landscape of the old gloomy house that Charlie lives (very gray and very damaged looking) then each fold will again explain a deadly sin but will be shown with a image. Then finishing with the keys to the factory that Charlie receives that the end.

Simchick - The Monster at the End of This Book

The Monster at the End of this Book is a kids book with Grover from Sesame Street. Each time you turn the page Grover tries to get you to stop turning them until finally you get to the end of the book and the only monster there is Grover. If you haven't read the book before it is a really short read. Here's a link to an online version:

This idea comes from the part of the book where Grover builds a brick wall and then it is destroyed. As you unfold the folds, Grover tries to get you to stop and the bricks begin falling.











This thumb is similar to my first one but the folds are much simpler.










My final idea folds out in the shape of the Sesame Street sign. When it is folded into the cover, it is more text based rather than image based like my previous ideas. I would draw out the lettering for the cover to tie it in with the book, since the entire book was rendered by hand.







I'm leaning towards the first and third ideas, I want to try to incorporate both and see if I can come up with something that works.

The Book I chose is Paper Towns by John Green

High school senior Quentin Jacobsen (known to his friends as "Q") has been in love with his neighbor, the mysterious, beautiful, and adventuresome Margo Roth Spiegelman for as long as he can remember. So when one night she appears at his window to ask for his help in playing revenge pranks, he can't refuse. The two travel to Margo's ex-friend Becca's house, where Margo's boyfriend is cheating on her, along with her boyfriend's house, the house of an old bully, and Sea World, where Margo and Q dance together to an old song playing on the loudspeaker. At the end of the night, Margo leaves Q with a hug and says, "I. Will. Miss. Hanging. Out. With. You."

The next day at school, Q is hardly surprised that Margo isn't there. But when no one sees her for days, Q and his friends Radar and Ben, with the help of Margo's best friend, Lacey, begin searching for the clues Margo has left for Q. Based on these clues, Q, Radar, Ben, and Lacey try to find her. The third part of the story, "The Vessel", is about their road trip. After twenty-one hours of driving they arrive in Agloe, New York. There, they find Margo and discover that she did not want to be found. The clues had not been meant to lead her friends to her, but rather to show Q the abandoned subdivision in which she used to hang out.^[3][4]

The book is named for "paper towns", fictitious towns which are added to maps to protect against copyright infringement.

1. I was thinking of showing a cul-de-sac which would double as a map showing their adventure the night before Margo disappears.

2. This one is based off one of the book covers. I was thinking of having the jacket fold out into a map and some how in the folds have the clues Margo left Q. I couldnt add it in the drawing because I have to reread the book to find out what exactly the clues are.

3. I was thinking of having all list of things Margo and Q buy at walmart that they need during the course of their adventure and as you unfold there is a different thing showing.

4. This one is also based off of one of the book covers. I was thinking about putting the cross roads of the fictitious town Margo is hiding in.

5. Here is just a row of identical houses which Margos refers to as fake like a paper town. I was also thinking that maybe some how the houses could pop out once the poster was laying out.

6. I was thinking that somehow I can have a the whole eastern coast fold into the book jacket. Here I would show their road trip to find Margo. I would also incorporate things that happened along the way.
