Andrew Valdez- Thumbs-Martian Chronicles

SYNOPSIS
The Martian Chronicles
is a 1950s science fiction short story collection by Ray Bradbury that chronicles the colonization of Mars by humans fleeing from a troubled and eventually atomically devastated Earth, and the conflict between aboriginal Martians and the new colonists. The book lies somewhere between a short story collection and an episodic novel, containing stories Bradbury originally published in the late 1940s in science fiction magazines. For publication, the stories were loosely woven together with a series of short, interstitial vignettes.

1. I wanted to create a 1950s style poster with this idea. The style is very cheesy and uses strange typography angles. The environment is exaggerated and colors are washed out. There is also narratives told through out the background and collage aspects.

2. This was an idea played around the aspect of a panoramic picture taken of the mars surface. I wanted to play with type in the environment. There would be a spaceship landed that would make an appearance on corner of the poster.
3. I like this idea the best. Being that its about a story of colonization. I decided to make a fold out map of colonized Mars. It would be an info graphic poster of sorts, showing nearest planets and moons and have info on the planet itself. When folding it out, the user would be introduced to each aspect of the map (compass, legend, symbols, etc.) to finally reveal the entire map.

4. This idea is based on the spaceship they take to Mars. The folding poster would reveal a panoramic image of the cockpit of a would-be futuristic space ship. Upon each fold there would be a reveal of some sort of digital cockpit gauge, screen, or button(s) that would all tie into the final theme of the poster.
5. This is more a typographic approach to a poster. I would like to have over sized text layed over a photorealistic 1950s spaceship. Each flap or section would also incorporate important lines from the book but in similar fashion. They used large text in a lot of 1940s-50s sci-fi. I think this would be a great way to incorporate the era this book was written in by copying that style.

  1. I like number three a lot. The map idea and the folds of the poster will work perfectly. Is the map on the inside once the poster is completely unfolded? If so, what will be on the front cover before the poster is unfolded. I think you have a lot of options for that already. I like the inside of the ship the best for that.... maybe, I also like the idea of the other drawings.
    cool!

  2. I agree that #3 has quite a bit of potential. Where a couple of your concepts show only portions of Mars, here is an opportunity to on how big the world really is. As for the art style, if you do a search for "Hollow Earth Map", the map of Agartha might give you a little inspiration in the way of cheesy and illustrative, which might be fun. I also like the imagery for #5. The use of large type and quotes from the book would really help draw interest in the story, especially if someone hasn't read it before.

  3. I really like the idea of the 1950's style in #1. That could maybe be incorporated with whatever you choose to do. I also do like #3 for the poster I can totally see something like that hanging up in a room somewhere or just being an exciting pay off to get lost in for a second. Maybe # 2 could be more of a cover?
